THE INSPIRATION
LEGEND OF MAYAHUEL
Mayahuel, the goddess of agave, is a revered figure in Mexican mythology that has been shared by storytellers for centuries. Legend has it that Mayahuel longed for love and passion in her life. Held captive by her jealous grandmother, she dreamed of romance, rescue, and escaping the terrible confines of her secluded prison. Young Mayahuel fell in love with Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god. In a tragic turn of events, her transformation into the agave plant became a testament to her undying love, as she provided the nourishing sap used to create the sacred elixir of tequila. She has forever become a symbol of love, sacrifice, and the heart of Mexico's native spirit.

WHY A MURAL?
Mural art in Guadalajara has a rich and vibrant history that spans decades, leaving an indelible mark on the city's cultural identity and serving as a source of pride and inspiration for the local community. These monumental artworks have played a pivotal role in shaping Guadalajara's artistic landscape and fostering a strong sense of connection among its residents.
The roots of mural art in Guadalajara can be traced back to the early 20th century when Mexico, as a nation, was undergoing a cultural renaissance. Artists used murals as a medium to communicate powerful social and political messages while reinforcing a sense of place and belonging. They provide a visual narrative of the area's history, culture, and values, acting as a bridge between the past and the present.
El Tequileno is deeply rooted in the town of Tequila and is an integral part of its heritage. In 1959, Don Jorge Salles Cuervo eloquently named his tequila 'El Tequileño' to pay homage to the town and its rich history. Don Jorge supported local businesses by adorning their buildings with murals depicting El Tequileño. This legacy endures today with a series of murals celebrating Tequila’s unique cultural identity.
The murals of Mayahuel serve as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the Mexican people, fostering a sense of unity and resilience. Painted by local artist Pau Castiello, the murals draw inspiration from the goddess of fertility and the agave plant, Mayahuel, paying tribute to her eternal grace and beauty.

PAU CASTIELLO
Pau Castiello, a local artist hailing from Guadalajara, has etched an enduring mark on the hallowed walls of our distillery in Tequila, Jalisco. Born in Guadalajara, Pau was excited to fuse her passion for art with Mexico's native spirit, Tequila. From her earliest memories, nothing enthralled her more than holding a paintbrush. She fondly reminisces her mother's cries, "You've stained your clothes with paint again!" Her passion has guided her hand in crafting murals throughout the state of Jalisco. Pau has brought the goddess of agave and fertility to life with her vibrant colors and intricate detail. The mural now stands as a testament to the artist's gift and the enduring spirit of Tequila, inviting both locals and visitors to celebrate the town’s rich history and culture.
